An Ode to New York

WRITTEN FOR THE BLOSSOM TRAIL PLAYERS JUNIOR COMPANY INAUGURAL PRODUCTION, AN ODE TO NEW YORK. PREMIERED JUNE 21, 2018.

MASTER OF CEREMONIES:

Good evening, folks, we’d like to say hello.
Welcome to our first show, the Junior Co.!
We bring you music and dance, maybe some schmaltz and romance.
With us, there’s a chance for anything!

We’re thrilled to be up on this stage for you,
But we’d be lying if we said it wasn’t true
that more than anything, we sure would like to see COMPANY:
our names on signs and marquees of New York City, N. Y. C.,
the greatest city in the world! the greatest city in the world!

MASTER OF CEREMONIES:
(spoken)

That’s our dream, to go to New York City. You know? Nah, who am I kidding? You’re adults! You don’t dream! But that’s what we want! Wouldn’t it be cool? Just think!:

There’s Manhattan skyscrapers and Washington Heights,
there’s the Central Park Zoo and the Coney Isle lights. COMPANY:
There’s so much to see when seeing all of the sights Oooh
that I may never come back, ‘cause that just wouldn’t feel right. ______

New York, New York! New York, New York!
It’s a heckuva town! It’s a heckuva town!

So here we are, costumed from head to toe,
our hearts are beating fast but the orchestra’s slow.
Hey, I’m just kidding, they’re pro. Thanks for spending your dough.
In case you didn’t know— COMPANY:
LET’S GET ON WITH THE SHOW!
Here goes our ode to New Yohk

[MEDLEY OF SONGS ABOUT NEW YORK]

CODA:

MASTER OF CEREMONIES:

It would be swell to see the Empire State,
Then I’d head to Rockefeller Center, Studio Eight.
Maybe—

ALL:

Catch a Mets game, boy, that would really be great!
But that’s only if I can afford to pay the gate!

M.C. OR ALL:

Bring your sis and your bro because we gotta go—
just not when there’s too much snow—let’s make it so!
Learn to say “Yo!” instead of “Hello.”
Please don’t say no to any borough!

MASTER OF CEREMONIES:

This was our ode COMPANY:

ALL:
